Published: 09-03-08

width=65AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today visited Hurricane Gustav evacuees in Tyler as they prepared to return to their homes along the Southeast Texas coast.

“While we are thankful that Texas was spared from a direct hit I am proud of Texas’ efforts to protect residents and property from the threat of this hurricane” Gov Perry said.  “As residents begin to return home I want to thank them for their cooperation with state and local officials and thank all of those who have assisted in preparing to keep Texans and our Louisiana neighbors out of harm’s way.”

Officials in Hardin Jefferson and Orange counties announced yesterday that the mandatory evacuation order had been lifted and residents were safe to return home. Approximately 280000 residents from the Southeast Texas coast self evacuated.

Approximately 10000 residents who could not self evacuate were taken by bus to shelters and will be transported back to their homes beginning today.

Texas is also coordinating the return of Louisiana evacuees as soon as safely possible.
