State Representative Abel Herrero responds to the Governors State of the State
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas -- Today Governor Rick Perry delivered his seventh State of the State address to the 83rd Texas Legislature.

After years of underfunding and overburdening Texas schools Rick Perry and the Republican majority are standing by their unprecedented decision to cut $5.4 billion from our schools that led to overcrowded classrooms and thousands of teacher layoffs" said Rep. Herrero. Now Rick Perry has another solutiondivert additional funds away from schools that need it most. No matter if you call it scholarships or vouchers the idea will further grow the disparity in the Texas education system."
According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board over 11000 teachers were fired plus an estimated additional 15000 in school staff because of last sessions budget cuts.
The Governors choices outlined today remain shortsighted. With Texas showing great recovery from the recession Texans deserve a government that will invest in their future. And like most Texans I will continue to invest my time and support in helping Texans access affordable healthcare secure jobs that will allow them to provide for their families and receive a quality public education system for all schoolchildren" added Rep. Herrero.
Other topics addressed by Governor Perry today include the states needed investment in infrastructure and water needs and his decision to reject a Medicaid expansion. Medicaid expansion will potentially bring $100 billion in federal funds to Texas over the next 10 years and create an estimated 250000 new jobs.
Representative Abel Herrero is serving in his 4th term in the Texas House of Representatives. House District 34 represents parts of Nueces County including Corpus Christi Robstown Bishop Banquete Petronila Agua Dulce Driscoll and Sandia.
