Happy Independence Day!

From Lt. Governor David Dewhurst

4th-of-JulyTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – 237 years ago, a group of leaders who valued freedom over life itself cast aside anonymity to take a stand. By signing their names to the Declaration of Independence, 56 were potentially signing their own arrest warrant, but they still took pen in hand. They understood that oppressors and bullies thrive against the divided, so they boldly, publicly, unapologetically stood together. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, we find ourselves increasingly pushed around again by a distant power, our own federal government, which has been using its power of taxation to intimidate conservative groups, the power of technology to conduct domestic spying and the threat of prosecution to silence free speech. Unity in the face of government run amok is more important than ever.

As conservatives, we will not resort to the left’s favored approach of a loud angry mob, but instead seek change in the only acceptable way: informed expression of our beliefs, unity as a party and full participation in free, accurate elections. As we look forward to the next electoral cycle, we see an opportunity to restore the values that made America great and defend the principles that have established Texas as an economic powerhouse.

As we reflect this week on the courage displayed on July 4th 1776, let’s resolve to make our own stand for what’s great about America and honor our Founding Fathers by standing together.

God bless you and may God bless Texas.

David Dewhurst
