CQ Politics - PollTracker harry-reidSenate Majority Leader Harry Reids (D-Nev.) standing in his home state has hit a new low and his ownership of the Democrats health care overhaul is hurting not helping. Fifty-two percent of registered Nevada voters now have an unfavorable opinion of Reid while just 33 percent have a favorable view according to a poll conducted Jan. 5 through 7 by Mason-Dixon polling for the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The margin of error was 4 percent. And just 35 percent of Nevada voters support the Democrats health care overhaul legislation a 4 point drop since December. Fifty-four percent oppose it including 62 percent of independents and 89 percent of Republicans. Sixty percent of voters disapprove of Reids efforts to shepherd the bill through the Senate; 33 percent approve. Reid also continues to trail three prospective GOP opponents. Against former Republican state party chair Sue Lowden Reid registers 40 percent of the the vote to Lowdens 50 percent. Real estate developer Danny Tarkanian tops Reid 49 to 41 percent and former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle leads 45 to 40 percent over the Democratic senator. In each match-up the Republican candidate wins more than 50 percent of independent voters while Reid only garners about one-quarter of the independent vote. Tarkanian leads the GOP primary field at 28 percent with Lowden receiving 26 percent Angle 13 percent and state Sen. Mark Amodei (R) 1 percent. Five other Republicans dont register any support and 32 percent of Republican voters remain undecided. Harry Reids son Rory is also not faring well with Nevada voters trailing in the the states governors race against former federal judge Brian Sandoval (R). In a contest between Reid chairman of the Clark County Commission Sandoval and independent Oscar Goodman the current mayor of Las Vegas Sandoval takes 35 percent of the vote Goodman 33 percent and Reid 20 percent. If embattled incumbent Gov. Jim Gibbons (R) is the GOP nominee Goodman leads with 41 percent of the vote Reid earns 24 percent and GIbbons 21 percent. While Reid Sandoval and Gibbons have all declared they are running Goodman has only said that he is considering a campaign and has made no official decision one way or the other. With Goodman out of the picture Sandoval becomes the clear favorite. In a head-to-head match-up with Reid he leads by double digits -- 53 to 31 percent. Against Gibbons Reid would win 42 to 26 percent. Reid does not face competition for the Democratic nomination. In the GOP primary Sandoval leads Gibbons 39 to 23 percent with North Las Vegas Nevada Mayor Michael Montandon earning 7 percent of the vote.
