These competitive grants from the Office of Rural Community Affairs are for sewer improvements in colonias.

These funds are available from appropriations for the Community Development Block Grant program of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program is administered for the State of Texas by ORCA through the Texas Community Development Block Grant (TxCDBG) Program.
“These three grants totaling $768651 will allow the Urban County Program to extend sewer service to approximately 275 families in Hidalgo County” said Urban County Program Director Diana Serna. “We are thankful to the Office of Rural Community Affairs for realizing the immense need in Hidalgo County for these basic services many of us take for granted.”

A colonia construction grant in the amount of $329037 will be for making improvements to sewer lines in the Donna-area colonia of Ponfilo Martinez and the Weslaco-area colonia of Rosedale Heights.

A Texas Community Development Colonia Economically Distressed Areas Program (CEDAP) grant in the amount of $342000 will help 14 colonias and 222 families in the Mission area get hooked up to sewer service for the first-time. And an additional CEDAP grant in the amount of $97614 will connect 4 colonias or 51 households in the Mercedes area.
