Itd be bad enough if Abedin sent any classified information using a personal email account while having a security clearance at the State Department. However she never should have been granted that security clearance in the first place.
In order to be hired for the position she held at State Abedin would have been required to fill out a Form 86 the purpose of which is to determine background associations and any conflicts of interest that may preclude said individual from being hired.
Below is the Weekly Standards Stephen Hayes confirming that Abedin used personal email while... employed at the State Department. As Hayes points out the larger short-term issue is if Abedin used that email to conduct State Department business or worse sent classified information from that email. The larger issue involves the matter of Abedins connections which would become exponentially more problematic if security was breached.

Abedins affiliations with the Muslim Brotherhood became a source of national controversy in 2012 when Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and four other Congressmen sent five separate letters to various Inspectors General including at the State Department.
The letter said in part:
...the Departments Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin has three family members - her late father her mother and her brother - connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations. Her position affords her routine access to the Secretary and to policy-making.
It was revealed in 2011 that Abedins mother constitutes one of 63 leaders in the Muslim Sisterhood organization.
During a speech at the National Press Club soon thereafter former U.S. prosecutor Andrew McCarthy went into great detail about why Abedins associations matter. Contrary to objections by left-wing reporters guilt by association does not apply because that is something that may or may not factor in to a criminal case. When talking about hiring someone who will receive a security clearance associations do matter:
Now we have multiple credible reports that Abedin like Hillary used personal email while she was employed at State.
As such compounding the question about how Abedin was able to get the position she held as Deputy Chief of Staff to Clinton in the first place are new questions about whether she was using personal email during her tenure at State to conduct State Department business.
The truth is out there.
