Homeland Security Subcommittee Chair Applauds CR; Demands DHS Use Funds to Enforce the Law

john-carterTexas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C.  House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman John Carter (R-TX31) today applauded the introduction of H.R. 933 by House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers to prevent a government shutdown and continue government operations until the end of the fiscal year on September 30 2013.  This funding bill provides the means for DHS to fulfill its vital missions and enforce the law" says Carter.  I am also very pleased that it restores $7 billion in defense funding which is a good start in mitigating the negative effects of the sequestration process that began last week in ways that will retain the budget savings with commonsense replacements." The CR package provides funding and legislative direction for CBP ICE FEMA DHS cybersecurity programs and the Coast Guard to comply with existing statutory requirements and execute essential missions.  In addition this package requires DHS to submit a line-item spend plan as is typically required with long-term CRs that demonstrates how DHS agencies will meet their legal obligations and mission requirements. Carter is adamant that DHS complies with congressional mandates on use of funds to head off any further Administration attempts to release criminal aliens from detention or to decrease border security efforts. I expect nothing less than ICEs full compliance with the law by immediately ceasing any further release of criminal aliens inside our country along with maintaining the federally mandated minimum capacity of 34000 detention beds.  Likewise CBP must maintain its operational workforce and enforcement strategies" says Carter. Carter is demanding a full accounting by DHS for the controversial release of an unknown number of criminal aliens in advance of the sequester last Friday.  Current estimates range from hundreds to thousands of criminals released inside the United States while DHS has yet to respond with requests for detailed information.
