Houston Chronicle to Lay Off 10 Percent of Work Force

Houston Business Journal   width=180Six months after a round of layoffs the Houston Chronicle is once again facing a reduction in its work force. In a Feb. 13 memo to employees obtained by the Houston Business Journal Chronicle Publisher and President Jack Sweeney said the newspaper planned a reorganization extending over 60 days which included a reduction in the work force of at least 10 percent. Sweeney also wrote that the paper would be looking at other cost saving initiatives so we can keep job eliminations as low as possible." One of the initiatives started this week. Beginning March 2 the business and city and state sections will be rolled into one on Mondays and Tuesdays according to Naomi Engel a spokeswoman for the Chronicle . The two sections will return to their previous standalone sections for the rest of the week and on Sundays. Meanwhile last week the newspaper introduced a new classified advertising medium called Kaango. The weekly section published on Thursdays contains traditional classified advertisements but in a smaller tabloid format and with full-color photos. Kaango can also be accessed online at KaangoHouston.com.
