A report prepared for the U.S. Conference of Mayors forecasts that San Antonio will shed some 8100 jobs by the end of this year.
The study conducted by IHS Global Insight showed that of the 363 U.S. metropolitan areas studied only five are not expected to see job losses this year. McAllen is the only Texas market that will actually see a slight job increase according to the report.
Among the other Texas markets Dallas ranks 10th for the most anticipated job losses among the 363 metro areas examined with a projected loss of 45200 jobs.
Houston will lose an estimated 43800 jobs in 2009 — ranking 11th nationwide in terms of losses.
San Antonio ranks 50th with its projected decline of 8100 jobs and Austin ranks 141st with 2800 expected job losses.
New York City will lose the most jobs — 181000 — in 2009 the report said. Los Angeles will have the second-greatest losses at 164000 followed by Miami with 85000 Chicago with 80300 and Boston with 58500.
The report notes that unemployment will top 10 percent in 70 metro areas including Detroit and Cleveland.
