How will Washington Respond

width=64Governor Rick Perry needs to be ready for battle if the White House pulls a stunt on Texas stimulus money as they did for South Carolina. South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford wrote last week that President Obama declined Sanfords request to suspend restrictions on $700 million in stimulus funds so that South Carolina could pay off their numerous state debts. When youre in a hole the first order of business is stop digging. South Carolina is in a hole and its not a shallow one" said Sanford If South Carolina could use stimulus money to pay down debt in two years we will be able to spend cut taxes or invest even if the federal government can no longer provide more money its not a remote possibility." Before Sanford received acknowledgment of his request from the White House he received word that the Democratic National Committee was launching a campaign-style TV attack-ad against him for making such a request. Not much later Sanford learned that the White House had rejected his request for a waiver. Taking federal stimulus money will only postpone changes essential to South Carolinas prosperity. Though well-intended it forestalls hard choices we must make" said Sanford I just dont believe a problem created by too much debt will be solved by piling on more debt. Obama wanted to end past politics and in his presidential inaugural address proclaimed an end to the petty grievances and false promises the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics. A breath of fresh air? It could have been had it not been fowled by the stench of attacking television ads and limited discussion amongst Sanford and other governors on the merits of their dissent."  An eye-opener is now hitting Americans. People like Sanford who saw historical significance in Obamas candidacy and the change he spoke of before South Carolinas presidential primary last year to note the historic nature of the candidacy and the potential positive change in tone it represented are now being given a choice of one option. Is this the new brand of politics we were promised?" asks Sanford. Its unfortunate. But in coming months well continue advancing the debate at the state level about the merits of debt repayment. The fact remains that while wed all like to spend unlimited dollars on the very real needs that exist in our state we must spend in the context of what is sustainable." Texas has prospered during the national economic struggle due in large part from conservative fiscal management. Get ready Texas for theres a chance that Washington may not support our management any longer.
