Hype, Substance, and the Comptroller Debate

Today’s Logic Letter

lynn_woolleyTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Dear Lojiks,

The Super Bowl is back to its old ways of being the worst game of the year. Nothing is so hyped and nothing is such a letdown. When I was in junior college, I had to construct a three-point speech for class. In those days, I was a big pro football fan, not having become as cynical as I am now.

I found an article in “QUARTERBACK” Magazine called “Can the Super Bowl be Saved?” Essentially,it was about the idea that NFL teams (even after the merger) would continue to dominate AFL teams. I did the speech and made a good grade. But Joe Willie Namath and the Jets beat the mighty Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3 — and all the questions were answered. The next year, the AFC Chiefs beat the NFC Vikings. The game was interesting in those days.

Later, I became a college fan for a couple of reasons. First, I realized that the NFL teams are owned by billionaires who rig the rosters so that all the games will be competitive (except the Super Bowl) and make more money. They call it “parity,” but it kills most of the excitement. Second, there is no reason to cheer for someone’s wholly-owned business. At least, when I cheer for the Longhorns, I have the satisfaction of knowing I had some involvement with the school.

I was somewhat appalled, but not surprised that FOX NEWS SUNDAY was a one-hour promo for the game. Talk about a sell-out. I tuned into FNS to hear politicians grilled by a host who isn’t a raging liberal. And I got football fluff. Embarrassing. All the Sunday shows were particularly bad yesterday. And, in my market, we only get half of FACE THE NATION.

Bill O’Reilly got the pregame interview with Obama, who cannot resist being a part of the hype, even if it means being interviewed by FOX. There was virtually nothing on this interview in the morning papers that I take. I do know that Bill-O asked him about the IRS, Benghazi, and other Obama failures and that there was some sparring. I also know that Donald Trump has critiqued Obama for failing to wear a necktie.Obama_OReilly

We’ll dig up the audio.

The Republican-Mainstream betrayal on immigration strikes me as the big story right now. Paired with why the GOP would change the subject away from the failing Obamacare issue. Until we can fix the birthright citizenship problem, any fix is difficult. Anchor babies — thousands born at Parkland Hospital each year — are a dealbreaker for me.

From time to time, I get “urgent” emails about how Obama is “advancing toward martial law” as if he refuse to step down at the end of his second term. This make us look bad. Yes, he is ultra-partisan and he is putting his people in key places within our government. But he will be gone from the White House at the end of his term as called for in the Constitution. I will put up $10,000 against anyone who feels differently. However, you must put up the $10 grand NOW as I will do. We will choose a bank to hold the funds in a CD with an agreed-on law firm to oversee it. At the end of the term, if we elect a new president and Obama steps down, I withdraw the $20,000 + interest. If he remains in office past his term, my challenger gets the $20,000. Anybody willing to take the bet?

I didn’t think so.

peggy-venableTomorrow night, the State Comptroller debate will be held at Salado’s Tenroc Ranch. I will be there to act as Master of Ceremonies and the four candidates will be grilled by Peggy Venable. www.T-SPAN.TV will be there to stream. Many people thought the Lt. Gov. debate was outstanding, so please try to attend this one as well. I will be wearing a necktie, as a I am not a cool dude like the President.

I gotta go check and see if there is looting in Seattle. See on you on the air!

Logically,

Lynn Woolley
