King Speaks Out on Property Tax Reform

width=65Austin - State Representative Phil King (R – Weatherford) spoke today of his concern with the status quo of the property tax and appraisal system in Texas following a hearing of the House Select Committee on Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform.

The committee which King was recently appointed to met today to hear testimony on the property tax system and the problems that are involved with the way property is appraised in Texas. King has been a long-time advocate of replacing the property tax system with a consumption-based tax.

King stated “Texans are paying over 40 of their paychecks to government each year in taxes and can’t afford to pay anymore. Under the current appraisal system many Texans are seeing their property appraisals increased by 10 each year resulting in them paying higher and higher taxes on their property.

This system must be scrapped and replaced with a consumption based tax. It is simply not right that people who supposedly own their homes have to pay rent to the government in the form of property taxes.”

“I’m encouraged by some of the testimony we heard today and excited at the opportunity this committee has to make recommendations to the legislature on how we can best fix this problem that has become such a burden on the people of Texas” King said in closing.
