Legislative Hearing in Richardson to Review Immigration Enforcement

Published: 01-31-08

RICHARDSON TX – On Friday two legislative committees will hold a joint public hearing to identify ways to improve coordination of immigration enforcement between government corrections providers including local jails and probation departments. Currently no statewide protocols exist for local agencies to identify illegal immigrants and coordinate with federal authorities. The hearing will include invited testimony from subject-matter experts as well as public testimony.

The Texas House Committee on Corrections and the Committee on County Affairs were issued a charge by Speaker Tom Craddick to study coordination of immigration enforcement among correctional facilities and make recommendations in advance of the next legislative session in 2009.
State Representative Jerry Madden (R-Plano) chairs the Corrections Committee and will host the joint hearing in the conference center at the University of Texas at Dallas. The public is invited to attend and offer testimony.
