Legislative Updates - Working Around the Clock

From the Desk of Representative Dan Flynn width=65As your State Representative it is important to me to keep my constituents updated on significant legislative activity. As a reminder our Legislature meets only 140 days every odd year and there are only 31 days remaining. We are now working around the clock to ensure Texas is producing jobs reducing government overregulation improving education and increasing the quality of life for our children and seniors. This week several substantive issues arose and policy debates occurred but the most prominent issue was education. Wednesday the Texas House passed House Bill 3 which ensures that every child in a Texas public school will have a strong core of academic opportunity. Through many facets including requiring schools to increase the number of students meeting the college readiness standard this bill necessitates that students graduating from Texas high schools are academically prepared for college. House Bill 3 also allows applied courses and career and technical courses to be used to meet requirements of the four core subject areas. By expanding career and technical opportunities we allow Texas students every opportunity to The bill retains one diploma with three plans advanced recommended and basic. The recommended diploma plan includes four credits in each of the four core subject areas - math science English and social studies two credits of foreign language and eight electives selected by students and parents. These eight electives give students the flexibility to cater to their individual objectives. School districts will be evaluated annually based on student test scores complete rates and financial integrity. Schools that achieve outstanding results in areas such as academic achievement workforce readiness second language acquisition and fine arts will earn distinctions to be awarded using multiple measures. Also several bills that I filed to solve some problems unique to House District 2 had positive movements these past weeks. HB 78 saves taxpayer money by eliminating wasteful County processes; HB 2042 saves taxpayer money by updating stray livestock notices; HB 4618 clarifies scope of easements and protects property rights; and HB 358 helps the fight to eliminate 8 Liner Gamerooms develop skills which will serve them for the rest of their lives.
