Living History Veterans Day Program to Commemorate at Camp Mabry

width=107By Mr. Jeff Hunt Texas Military Forces Museum Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas  On November 6-7 the Texas Military Forces Museum located at Camp Mabry in Austin will stage a special living history program to commemorate Veterans Day.  Close Assault 1944 focuses on the experience of the G.I.s who served in the 36th Infantry Division Texas National Guard during World War II.  Admission to the program and the 45000-squre foot Texas Military Forces Museum are free. The program includes displays of equipment uniforms vehicles and weapons used by American and German troops in the European Theater between 1942 and 1945.  Some of the most famous weapons of the war will be demonstrated including the Thompson Submachine gun the Browning Automatic Rifle and the M1 Garand.  At the end of each program the museums Living History Detachment will recreate a combined arms attack on a German held village using small arms automatic weapons an operational M3 Halftrack and M4 Sherman tank. The museum will conduct Close Assault 1944 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.  Bleacher seating souvenirs and concessions will be available to the public.  In addition a military book sale will take place inside the museum. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday each week. Entrance to Camp Mabry is off 35th Street west of MoPac. All adults must show a photo ID to enter the post and all vehicles must have proof of valid insurance. Visitor comments from previous shows:
