Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Today Lt. Governor David Dewhurst appointed five members of the Texas Senate to the Joint Interim Committee to Study Alzheimers Disease.
Almost everyone knows someone whose life has been unraveled by Alzheimers disease said Lt. Governor Dewhurst. Continuing support of Alzheimers research will position Texas as a leader in the race to find new ways to detect delay treat and ultimately prevent this devastating disease.
According to the National Alzheimers Association Texas ranks third among the 50 states in the number of Alzheimers cases. There are currently 340000 Texans living with the disease and by 2025 that number is expected to increase more than 38 percent.
The Texas Legislature created the joint interim committee to study the overall economic and systemic impact of Alzheimers disease create an inventory of infrastructure and capacity for addressing the challenges of the disease and identify ways to support and expand statewide planning through the activities of the Texas Alzheimers Research Consortium.
Lt. Governor Dewhurst appointed the following members to the committee: Senator Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound) Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. (D-Brownsville) Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) and Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo).
