Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – “As Obamacare continues to undermine the American healthcare delivery system, we must ensure Texas is leading the way with sensible, conservative solutions,” said Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, continueing his commitment to women’s health by charging the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services with studying the implementation of initiatives created to enhance the health of Texas women.
“Obamacare is not only putting states at risk for bankruptcy, it’s threatening the integrity of our health care delivery system,” concluded Dewhurst.
“Now, more than ever, the State of Texas must effectively manage and monitor the sensible health programs created to provide essential care for our citizens.”
He also called on the committee to assess the effectiveness of programs designed to improve mental health for all Texans.
“During this year’s session, we made great strides in protecting the health of Texas women and we should continue our efforts in this area during the next session,” said Dewhurst.
“The Legislature prioritized women’s health and mental health this session, demonstrating our strong commitment to women and to individuals battling mental illness,” said chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound.
“Through these interim studies we will ensure that Texas women have access to cancer screenings, wellness exams and other preventive health services — and that our mental health programs are achieving positive outcomes.”
Having championed many life-saving and life-changing health initiatives during his tenure, Dewhurst instructed the Health & Human Services Committee to focus on the following:
MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE. Dewhurst asked the Health & Human Services Committee to monitor recent programs designed to improve mental health and substance abuse services. He also asked the committee to assess the contribution that these programs had on several improved outcomes and address any gaps in the current mental health and substance abuse system.
IMPACT OF WOMEN’S SERVICES. Dewhurst called on the committee to monitor the implementation of all women’s health programs provided by the state. In addition, Dewhurst emphasized the importance of assessing the impact these programs had on outcomes such as improving access to preventative services, reducing unplanned pregnancies, and maximizing efficiencies.
Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst will continue to release his interim charges in the coming weeks.
