Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Today, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst appointed seven Senators to the Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking. The committee, established in 2011 and renewed by the Texas Legislature last year through House Concurrent Resolution 57, will build upon its previous work by studying ways to further combat human trafficking and identifying services available to its victims.
“Human trafficking is an unspeakable evil, and we must draw attention to a practice that so grievously violates essential human rights,” said Dewhurst. “I am confident this committee will take an unvarnished look at this ongoing atrocity and find ways to not only disrupt the supply and demand dynamic, but also provide care for its victims. We cannot rest until we have put an end to crimes of this nature.”
Senator Joan Huffman of Houston will co-chair the committee, which will also include Senators Brian Birdwell of Granbury, Donna Campbell of New Braunfels, Craig Estes of Wichita Falls, Jane Nelson of Flower Mound, Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio, and John Whitmire of Houston.
