Lynn Woolley: An Election For the Ages

The campaigns of Obama & Romney are dead opposites width=109By Lynn Woolley Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The election of 2012 is beyond important.  It is more than a decision between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney; these two men are nothing more than placeholders.  The decision we face as country is whether we are going to be a country that is dominated by Big Government or a more traditional country as described in the Declaration of Independence.   The campaigns of Obama and Romney are dead opposites and are proxies for the direction the country will take.  You can see it in the main promise that each candidate has made.  For Obama the promise is to tax the wealthy."  In a second term the President would like Robin Hood take from the rich and give to the poor.  During his first presidential campaign Mr. Obama made it clear to Sam Wurzelbacher a.k.a Joe the Plumber" that he believes in redistribution of wealth saying when you spread the wealth around its good for everybody.  The President doesnt see this as taking someones money; he sees it as social justice.  His goal is for people to be more equal and he sees government as the means to that end. Mitt Romneys most repeated promise is to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act also called Obamacare.  Even more than width=130Obamas ill-fated Stimulus bill Obamacare would transform the nation because it places our entire healthcare system in government hands.  Romney promises to end it before it can be fully implemented and replace it with a more market-based system.
  • Unlike the President Romney is no crusader for social justice or equality.  Mr. Romney is a fix it" expert someone who steps in when an organization is failing analyzes the situation and then takes whatever steps are needed to implement the required fix.
  • Unlike Obama he is not a particularly ideological person.  Hes right of center but not far right.
  • He is also likely to be the last of the old establishment Republicans to win the GOP nomination.
His promise to repeal Obamacare is to Romney a campaign pledge and a way to repair the faltering economy.  Regardless of what he thought when he implemented a similar plan in Massachusetts this is now and this is his big issue.  He cannot go back on it.  And so it becomes a symbol of where the country would go under President Romney.  If he can repeal Obamacare and deal with the Dodd-Frank law that has placed stiff regulations on financial institutions business would be freed.  But to do what?  Romney would say free to hire expand build and if too big to fail" is done away with to fade away if too many bad decisions are made.  Obama would say free to deny healthcare to people with existing conditions and free to return to the width=482way business was done before the Wall Street meltdown.  The $16 trillion dollar national debt is another harbinger.  President Obama mentions it from time to time but like economist Paul Krugman of the New York Times he sees it as a non-issue.  Krugman repeatedly calls for another larger stimulus.  Obama would do it if he could -- and he might be able to in a second term.  That would make the debt trillions of dollars larger and virtually end our ability to spend on anything other than interest payments on the debt and entitlements.   Romneys plan is just the opposite.  He wants to continue current spending levels on the military.  And by selecting Paul Ryan as his running mate Romney signaled that he is willing to take on entitlements.  Understand that President Obama did not tinker with the economy.  With Obamacare and Dodd-Frank he implemented monumental changes that take us down a path that Europe traveled a decade ago.  The next four years will serve to cement that direction or undo it.  The president that follows Obama or Romney will not have as many choices as we do now.  The direction we take on November 6th will set the tone for the future of our country more than any other modern election.   width=79As of November 7th were either on the road to a European-style social democracy with government-mandated equality for all or reaffirming the Founders vision of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness with minimal government interference.  It is indeed an election for the ages.
