As Chair of Homeland Security Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee announces investigation

Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) formally requested that the Department of Homeland Security conduct an internal investigation into the departments role in Operation Fast & Furious the botched gun running operation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms which put guns in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.
Rep. McCaul who chairs the Homeland Security Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee announced the investigation while speaking at the James Baker Institute at Rice University in Houston.
McCaul made the request after DHS failed to provide satisfactory responses to the subcommittees initial inquiries.
In a letter (see below) to the DHS Inspector General who confirmed he would conduct the inquiry Congressman McCaul requested the following:
- To what extent were DHS and its components involved in planning Operation Fast and Furious?
- To what extent were DHS and its components involved in the decision-making process implementing Operation Fast and Furious?
- What DHS policies processes and procedures exist for conducting arms smuggling investigations? To what extent did Operation Fast and Furious adhere to DHSs policies processes and procedures?
