McCaul Minute - August Work Period

Congressman Michael McCaul Update   mccaul4This has been the most memorable and productive August recess since I was first elected to Congress. We hosted a successful job fair that put 2000 candidates face to face with as many job openings. I have met with our farmers and ranchers to expedite drought assistance with veterans to help resolve a severe slowdown of treatment in Houston and our border sheriffs who still need resources to defend against the violence of the Mexican drug cartels. Above all it is gratifying to see so many Americans engaged in debate over the future of our health care system.   I believe our health care system needs to be reformed in order to ensure access to care for any American who wants it. But I will not support a government-run single payer system that increases taxes on small businesses and individuals and burdens employers with mandates and payroll tax increases. In short this bill will kill jobs when the economy can least afford it. Nor will I support a plan that diminishes quality of care and puts the government between patients and their doctors. Instead I have co-sponsored H.R. 3218 the Improving Health Care for All Americans Act. By the time debate resumes in Washington the Democrat leadership will have heard the voices of millions of Americans who oppose a government-run healthcare system. It is my hope this will result in open debate and a truly bipartisan solution. I have had the opportunity to meet with families doctors hospitals and businesses throughout the 10th District from Austin to Tomball and many points in between. I have been hosted at numerous public and private events to discuss healthcare.    Thousands more people have visited called or emailed our offices. What is clear is that the vast majority of my constituents across party lines oppose the government plan. I will continue to discuss this important issue with all stakeholders before I return to Washington after Labor Day. A public town hall meeting is planned for Katy September 4.
