National Day of Prayer & Protecting our Right to Religious Freedom

By Cong. Quico Canseco width=72Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON DC This week we celebrated National Day of Prayer an important tradition in our nation that was first established in 1952.  On May 3rd Americans across the country came together to exercise their constitutionally-guaranteed right to practice their faith and pray for the nation and our future.   Religion and prayer have been an integral part of American society throughout our history and have helped shape our nation into what it is today. Unfortunately the right of Americans to freely practice their faith has come under attack from a small segment of our society seeking to drive religion entirely from the public square.  width=180Whether they be efforts to prevent a valedictorian from saying a prayer at a high school graduation or to deny religious-affiliated groups the right to hire based on personal beliefs or even to remove a cross memorial honoring our nations fallen heroes constructed nearly 80 years ago the right of Americans to practice their faith freely in the public square is under siege.       As a devout life-long Catholic I strongly support the right of Americans to freely practice their faith in the public square unhindered by the federal government.  The Constitution guarantees Americans the freedom of religion not freedom from religion.   A former small business owner and lifelong Texan Congressman Canseco proudly represents the 23rd District of Texas.
