New Poll Shows Sharp Only Viable Democrat in Special U.S. Senate Race

width=65(AUSTIN) A new voter survey conducted by a respected polling firm and released this week shows that a special election for the United States Senate to replace incumbent Kay Bailey Hutchison if she resigns as widely expected would result in a runoff between former State Comptroller John Sharp and current Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. The poll by Global Strategy Group a Democratic polling firm with headquarters in Washington D.C. concludes that Sharp and Dewhurst are the best known candidates far outpacing all other potential contenders in all corners of the state and would be able to capitalize on the short time period of a special election. The poll showed that the other Democrat in the race is unknown outside of Houston and that several Republican contenders are too far behind at this point to make a runoff. Sharp today also filed his campaign reports with the Federal Elections Commission for the first quarter of 2009 showing that he raised $2516833.10 in contributions and loans and had $2432675.56 cash on hand as of March 31. John Sharp is a known quantity to Texans and has earned the highest percentage of votes of any Democrat for more than a decade" said Heidi Kirkpatrick Hedrick a veteran fundraiser serving as Sharps campaign treasurer. John doesnt have high negatives and his long record of solving problems is what voters are looking for in these challenging times."
