The Obama administration wants to make it easier for illegal immigrants with U.S. Citizen family members to apply for legal permanent residency. The Department of Homeland Security will post today for public comment an administrative change meant to reduce time illegal immigrants would have to be separated from their families during the application period.
Presently illegal immigrants are required to leave the U.S. in order to apply for a legal visa. Obamas proposed change would allow illegal immigrants to claim extreme hardship" if separated from their relatives and thus be allowed to remain in the U.S. The illegal immigrant once approved would then have to return briefly to their country of origin to pick up the legal visa.
The Obama administration is hoping to have the new procedures in place by the end of the year just in time for elections. Following the new proposals posting in the Federal Register the public will have 60 days to critique the change. Make sure your voice is heard!
