And Ive looked over and Ive seen the promised land. I may not get there with you but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land.
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Texas Insider Report: HOUSTON Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who worked previously with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations that re-investigated the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. issued the following statement on the forty third anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a voice of reason and a voice of inspiration in some of the darkest days of seeking justice for African-Americans during the civil rights era. Today on the anniversary of his death I urge our country to remember the ideals and the values that Dr King embodied. His words and legacy are still with us today and it is my hope that we can use them as an inspiration to guide us."
Regardless of where Dr. King traveled both in places he was accepted and not accepted he carried with him the practice of nonviolence in order to spotlight injustice. While we take time to reflect upon his legacy today let us remember that his words and spirit are still with us and it is my hope that we can use them as an inspiration to guide us through the difficult days we face now."
