Funding to support youth-based initiative width=71Texas Insider Report: Washington D.C. U.S. Representative Solomon P. Ortiz (D-Texas) announced a $150000 grant today to the Art Museum of South Texas by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant provides support for high-priority activities that advance the institutions mission and strategic goals. Funds can be used for research planning new programs and activities that support the efforts of Art Museum of South Texas. The Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi does a tremendous job of educating people of all ages about art and history" Ortiz said. With this funding the museum will expand its Youth Program which provides art education literacy and technological-based skills for youth from preschool to high school." The program aims to engage childrens interest in South Texas culture while providing educators tools to enrich school curricula. The program will be developed through outreach to the underserved population in the Coastal Bend and expanded to work with urban and rural school districts and private- and home-schooled students.  The Institute of Museum and Library Services recognition and support of the Youth Program Initiative at the Art Museum of South Texas is indeed an honor" said museum director Joseph B. Schenk. This grant will mean so much to the youth in South Texas providing them with critical educational resources and contact with the visual arts through museum programs. Many would not receive these kinds of experiences and opportunities without this grant. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz has long been a supporter of the Art Museum and students in our area and we appreciate his efforts on behalf of museums and libraries in South Texas."  For more information about this grant contact Joseph B. Schenk museum director at (361) 825-3507 or send an e-mail to joe.schenk@tamucc.edu.
