Ortiz Votes to Improve Veterans Health Care for Special Disabilities

width=71WASHINGTON--U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz (D-Texas) voted on Wednesday in favor of H.R. 5014 which clarifies that health care provided to certain individuals constitutes minimum essential coverage which passed in the House of Representatives. I have supported veterans and their families since I was first elected to Congress" said Ortiz who is chair of the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee. These men and women have devoted their lives to our country and our freedoms and we must guarantee them and their loved ones quality health care." This bill clarifies that coverage provided by the Veterans Administration to individuals who have Spina Bifida and other disabilities as a result of their parents exposure to Agent Orange during their service in the Vietnam and Korean Wars (Chapter 18 U.S.C.) qualifies as minimum essential coverage under the recently enacted health reform law.  It therefore ensures that none of these individuals will be required to purchase coverage beyond what they currently have. This bill is supported by several veterans service organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) the American Legion the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and AMVETS.
