Pena & Aliseda on Immigration Voter ID Redistricting & South Texas Politics

width=304Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas One of the biggest successes last Session that Jose & I both worked on were the Voter Integrity Bills. One bill I was very proud of was helping to get the dead voters off the rolls" Pena said. Over 100000 Registered Voters are dead and theyre still on the rolls as of a 2008 audit" said Aliseda. Said Aliseda about the fragile state of the state & national economy You cant raise taxes in an economy like this. I think raising taxes would have dwidth=337one exactly the opposite (than what a balance budget accomplishes.) It would have killed jobs." State Representatives Aaron Pena (HD-40 Edinburg) & Jose Aliseda (HD-35 Beeville) are long-time leaders in South Texas & Valley politics. What do they see for the future of that much-talked about and crucial region of the state?

The party of opportunity for Hispanics in Texas is the Republican Party. The Republican Party is welcoming Hispanics the Democrats take us for granted" said Aliseda. Voter ID was more important ... you mentioned Illegal Immigration and I dont think that is a big problem in our Election System anymore ... Voter ID is for the public to have confidence in the system because I think they had lost confidence in the system" said Aliseda. What happens is that people find out whos on the rolls and whos no longer with us and they take advantage of the system because theres a delay in reporting. We passed legislation that prevented that sort of abuse Pena said. Voters want to believe that they have a system thats at least as good as going to rent a movie at Blockbuster. This is 2011 everyone has an ID so I dont understand the argument of anyone saying that theyre not going to be able to vote" said Aliseda. The very people that the Democrats were claiming were not going to be able to vote ... the poor the elderly are the ones most likely to have an ID because theyre already to dependent on government assistance that they would need to have an ID to prove who they are. It was just a spurious argument on their part"Aliseda said. Every 10 years redistricting is probably one of the most partisan things thats done in the Legislature. Not everyone is going to agree not only from the political partys point of view ... but geographically theres a struggle going on for holding on to power especially in areas like West Texas thatre losing. But we accomplished our task and we did our job" said Pena.
