these exceptional women we are also inspiring young Texans to work hard and become the great leaders of tomorrow" said Gov. Rick Perry while announcing the Texas Governors Commission for Women will induct five outstanding Texas women into
the Texas Womens Hall of Fame.
The Texas Womens Hall of Fame celebrates accomplishments of those who have made significant contributions in areas such as business education philanthropy military and public service.
Inductees are native or current Texas residents whose achievements have significant ties to the state. The women were nominated by their peers and selected by an independent panel of judges. The induction ceremony is open to the public and will be held at Texas Womans University (TWU) on Friday October 12 at 10:30 a.m. Guests are asked to RSVP to Judy Elias at TWU by emailing

Arts and Humanities: Barbara Smith Conrad Center Point
Business: Nina Godiwalla Houston
Military: Major General (Ret.) Mary Saunders Denton
Philanthropy: Anne Lesley Corn Austin
Public Service: Justice Harriet ONeill Austin (at right)
The Texas Womens Hall of Fame was established in 1984 and more than 100 women have been inducted including former first ladies astronauts entrepreneurs and Olympic athletes.
The permanent exhibit honoring these women which features biographies and photographs of inductees was established by the Governors Commission for Women in 2003 at Texas Womans University in Denton.
