POLL: Romney Moves Ahead of Obama in North Carolina as Convention Begins

With the economy or jobs named as the most important issue for their vote this November a majority of North Carolina voters now say Mitt Romney would do a better job handling the economy than President Obama hardly the news the Obama Campaign hoped to see as the Democratic National Convention is held in Charlotte this week.   As the Democratic faithful descended on Charlotte to hold their National Convention a new Elon University Poll shows Mitt Romney and President Obama running closely in the much-watched swing state with 47 of likely voters now supporting Republican Mitt Romney versus 43 who back President Obama.
In 2008 Mr. Obama eked out a victory here edging out Senator John McCain width=176by less than a 1/2 a percentage point or about 14000 votes. Mr. Romney holds a 6-point edge among independents while women were nearly evenly divided the poll shows. Mr. Romney held an advantage among men whites as well as with higher-income and older North Carolina voters the Elon University Poll conducted in partnership with The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer from Aug. 25 to 30 showed. Mr. Obamas support came from younger lower-income and black voters. Voters were divided over which candidate shared their values most closely with slightly more saying that Mr. Obama would do a better job handling relations with other countries. While the poll shows a margin that is within the sampling error of plus or minus 3-age points the Obama width=110Campaign had hoped to see a boost in the tell-tale state as the Democratic National Convention gathered in Charlotte with hopes of solidifying the Presidents numbers. The Elon University Poll was conducted with live interviewers by cellphone and landline among 1089 likely voters.
