European nations like France Germany Czech Republic Belgium and Asian countries like Japan have developed nuclear plants as a safe and cost effective source of power over the last three decades. Nuclear power currently supplies only one-fifth of the U.S. demand for electricity. No new U.S. reactors have been ordered since the 1970s and the most recent nuclear reactor to begin operations was 10 years ago.
