(WASHINGTON DC) If U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is allowed to withhold $43000 in taxes for four years and House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-NY) gets away with not paying $10000 for over a decade then working Americans should get at least a two-month tax holiday under a plan by U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX).
And House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter (R-TX) would add a new IRS rule to that relief that would waive all penalties and interest for any U.S. citizen that simply paid their back taxes under his legislation the Rangel Rule Act of 2009.
The hypocrisy of top-ranking Democrats on tax issues was the focus of special orders speeches tonight on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted by Carter in which a tongue-in-cheek comparison was drawn between the Rangel-Geithner Tax Holiday Plan" unilaterally taken by the two top Democrats and the across-the-board tax relief sought by Gohmert and Carter for all working Americans.
Carter says the American people must know that the people they elected to straighten out the nations financial mess can be trusted and they dont have that assurance until these matters are resolved."
Gohmert said he talked with IRS employees from his district who are incensed they now have a boss that didnt pay his taxes when he knew he needed to." Gohmert said IRS employees would be immediately fired for underpaying their taxes while Geithner the head of the Treasury Department that oversees the IRS apparently intentionally underpaid his taxes for years. There are two standards in this Administration and that isnt right."
Gohmert pointed out the broken commitment of President Barack Obama from when the newly-elected President told CNN in February I campaigned on changing Washington and bottom-up politics. I dont want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards one for powerful people and one for ordinary folks who are working every day and paying their taxes.
The two former Texas judges were joined by U.S. Representatives Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey both Georgia physicians in blasting House Democrats for turning a blind eye to key members of their party with top IRS oversight authority having committed tax violations without penalty violations for which average working Americans would face serious punishment.
Everybody should be treated equally under the law" said Congressman Broun. If Mr. Rangel and Mr. Geithner can take a break on their taxes so should everybody in this country."
Under the Gohmert plan all Americans and employers would be granted a two-month break from income social security and medicare taxes. The tax holiday would equal around a 17 annual tax cut for all workers.
