Redistricting Maps Get Approval From Fed Court

By David Short San Marcos Daily Record Texas width=159Nov. 25SAN MARCOS The three-judge federal panel in San Antonio released proposed interim maps for U.S. Congressional districts on Wednesday. San Marcos and the far eastern portion of Hays County will remain in the new 35th Congressional District but will now form the northern portion of that district along with all of Caldwell County. Cut out from the new map is any portion of Travis County which will now be tucked back into the 25th Congressional District. The 25th also includes the vast majority of Hays County west of IH-35. What this potentially means to San Marcos and Kyle area voters is that incumbent Congressman Lloyd Doggett will likely run in his current District 25 rather than move into the new 35th District. And that leaves San Antonio State Rep. Joaquin Castro who is running in the Democratic primary and former San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz who is running in the Republican primary as the only two announced candidates in the 35th District. The court in San Antonio has given all parties until noon Friday to respond to this proposed interim map after which the court will issue a final ruling. The timing is becoming a critical issue as filing for all 2012 primary offices begins on Monday Nov. 28 and runs for just two weeks meaning candidates need to know where the boundary lines will be in order to file for office. The new map with all Texas Congressional Districts can be found on the Texas Legislative Council website at http://gis1.tlc.state.tx.us. Plan C220 is the official map name.
