SAN ANTONIO – Renowned biologist and speaker/conservation writer Shane P. Mahoney will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural Texas Wildlife Association Foundation Luncheon held on Friday June 27 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. The luncheon entitled “Opportunities for All” is destined to become one of the highlights of WildLife 2008 the 23rd annual convention of the Texas Wildlife Association. Luncheon tickets are $150/person with $100 being a tax-deductible donation benefiting the Foundation’s education programs.
“Shane Mahoney is one of the world’s strongest spokesmen for conservation” said Charles M. Davidson President TWAF. “He is known for challenging his audiences to think deeply about their conservation beliefs noting that society’s values like nature have been shaped by evolution and history. As an avid hunter and angler he examines the future of our cherished traditions from many different angles provoking thought and conversation.”
Mahoney a native of Newfoundland is a recognized expert on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. He is a committed hunter and angler who lectures frequently in the United States and Canada on the future of hunting and sport fishing and the role hunters and anglers have played in conserving our wildlife legacy. He has been invited to speak to wildlife professionals natural resource agencies corporations and international panels about their roles and responsibilities in conservation leadership.
A prolific researcher and writer Mahoney has authored or co-authored more than 120 scientific and popular articles and research reports. His research interests are expansive ranging from seabird breeding behavior and waterfowl parasites to predator/prey relationships and population dynamics of black bears lynx moose and woodland caribou. Currently he is cross-appointed at three universities in Canada and is the founding executive director of the Institute of Biodiversity Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Mahoney has also taken his conservation message to the airwaves. He has written and voiced numerous award-winning radio programs in Canada. He has appeared in several wildlife films produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation the Turner Broadcasting Network the British Broadcasting Corporation and National Geographic. Mahoney was instrumental in the production of “Opportunity for All” a documentary that tells the story of the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation.
Additional Information: The Texas Wildlife Association was founded in 1985 to support voluntary stewardship on private lands using three means: Conservation Legacy (conservation education) hunting heritage and advocacy. Today TWA members care for and control almost 40 million acres of rangeland and wildlife habitat that are key components of Texas’ ecosystem providing wildlife habitat aquifer recharge flood control carbon sequestration and many other environmental benefits.
In 1991 TWA’s founders created a charitable foundation to help fund the organization’s education and conservation initiatives. TWAF ensures a legacy of conservation and the heritage of hunting through education.
