Rep. Alonzo Announces DREAMERs Scholarships

Urges Student Applicants to Look into the Program –DEADLINE to APPLY: March 31, 2014

roberto-alonzoTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Texas State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo of Dallas today joined a growing list of policymakers throughout the country in announcing a first- ever of its kind and exciting scholarship program geared specifically for DREAMers (or Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors).

The DREAM Act is a legislative proposal first introduced in the US Senate on August 1, 2001 (S. 1291 by Dick Durban/Orrin Hatch). According to many public officials like Alonzo this new scholarship program will finally give these well-deserved students the path they need to reach the American Dream, and contribute to the future of Texas and the nation. The Dallas lawmaker urged DREAMers to apply for the scholarship; Deadline to apply is March 31, 2014, and the website for application is:  http://thedream.us/scholars/

“I am thrilled for all DREAMers and their families for this first-ever scholarship opportunity.  As a firm believer of education for all students – including a college education, I  believe that the DREAM Act and especially this scholarship opportunity has so much potential in advancing the educational aspirations, professional careers, and dreams of so many young men and women not only in Texas, but all over the country.  In the end, the DREAM Act and this scholarship program especially, will benefit our entire economic climate in the long run as they will become productive members of society and give back to those communities that have always supported them, “ said  Rep. Alonzo.

“And as I have always said in the past, without a doubt, every capable Texas student including our DREAMers –  like so many others across all every corner  of the country – should have the benefits of going to a college or university regardless of family income status, citizenship, ethnicity, or prior collegiate track record in the immediate family.  Equally important, all Texans and Americans alike – and that includes Latinos  – our new MAJORITY in TEXAS – should have the opportunity to succeed professionally and survive economically in our society, whether it be in urban, rural, suburban, east, west, north, or south Texas,” continued Rep. Alonzo.

In June of 2013, Don Graham, Henry R. Munoz, and Gaby Pacheco convened a group of people, which consisted of DREAMers, national and state-based organizations, post-secondary educational institutions and Fortune 500 leading companies, around a board room table to discuss the creation of a scholarship fund for DREAMers.  They committed to work together to provide a low-cost, high quality college education to undocumented students.

So, TheDream.US was born. The program is a national scholarship fund for immigrant youth who have received DACA, who want to obtain a college education and give back to their communities.

TheDream.US provides college scholarships to highly motivated DREAMers who want to get a college education but cannot afford it. Our scholarships of up to $25,000 will help cover your tuition, fees, and books for an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at our partner colleges in NYC, Miami, Washington D.C., El Paso, Rio Grande Valley, and online.
