Rep. Alonzo Joins DPS Efforts

Urges Thanksgiving Travelers To Obey Traffic Laws Slow Down Buckle Up And Drive Sober But Most Importantly Give Thanks roberto-alonzoDALLAS TX - Today Texas State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo joined law enforcement efforts across the state including the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Dallas police by encouraging all drivers to slow down buckle up and drive sober during the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday November 26 and the entire  weekend that follows.  Thanksgiving  Day  is traditionally observed on the fourth Thursday of November.   Most Texans like Americans all over the country will be  observing the holiday with a traditional  long weekend which for most will start on Wednesday evening November 25 and runs through Sunday evening November 29 2009.  Most people will be returning to work the following Monday November 30 2009. As we prepare to celebrate one of the most important  and traditional American holidays of the year I encourage all Texans to give thanks and be grateful for the many wonderful things that we have and cherish as Americans including the abundance of many freedoms rights and opportunities that so many other countries do not have. I especially urge everyone to remember all our service men and women who are serving in the military to allow us to have many of those freedoms. And of course we must not forget that this years Thanksgiving has more special meaning because of the horrible incident that happened at Fort Hood earlier this month.  I also encourage everyone to remember the less fortunate the poor the homeless and all those others that may be going through some difficult times in their lives.  Most importantly I urge everyone to keep this holiday a celebration and dont let it become another tragedy said Rep. Alonzo. Additionally I urge everyone to be extra cautious take their time and be well-prepared as they climb into their vehicles and get on the busy roads and highways to be with their families and friends.  Because of the added congested traffic that traditional holidays like Thanksgiving usually bring our neighborhood streets freeways and highways will be extremely busy.  This means there will be more Texans traveling all over the state.  To make sure we enjoy a happy and grateful holiday I encourage all travelers to take the extra time to slow down buckle up and drive sober.  It only takes a split second for a serious accident to happen and then turn our families into a time of mourning rather than into a time of giving thanks for what we have as Texans and Americans continued Rep. Alonzo.   According to DPS more troopers will be patrolling Texas roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday.   Additionally troopers will be looking for drivers who are intoxicated speeding or not properly securedor who have passengers who are not properly secured.  DPS troopers will be looking for drivers who are endangering themselves and others by breaking the laws.  Troopers will be participating in Operation CARE - Combined Accident Reduction Effort - a nationwide effort by police agencies to reduce fatalities on major interstate highways during holiday weekends.  Thanksgiving Day in America should be characterized as a time to offer thanks blessed with  family gatherings  happy holiday meals and as a time to be grateful for all the constitutional rights freedoms privileges responsibilities and duties that we possess as proud Americans.  It should be a time to be grateful for living  in the greatest country in the world and for having the proudest military that is second to none.  It should not be a time to mourn death.  This is why it is so important that we be extra careful when we travel to be with loved ones continued Rep. Alonzo.  Since roads are more likely to be crowded DPS reminds drivers to leave themselves plenty of time to get where theyre going. Avoid bad driving habits that lead to road rage such as: •         Not using turn signals •         Driving in the passing lane •         Tailgating flashing lights or honking •         Using high beams in traffic •         Not allowing adequate time for a given trip. When confronted with aggressive drivers the DPS also recommends that you: •         Put your pride in the back seat and move aside. •         Do not speed up block lanes slam or tap on brakes. •         Report extreme cases of reckless driving to the appropriate authorities. •         Do not retaliate gesture or make eye contact. •         Make sure everyone is buckled up.
