Other Events Resolutions Planned in Austin
Dallas TX - On Saturday March 28 Rep. Roberto R. Alonzo participated in two events honoring Cesar E. Chavez paying tribute to the inspiring life and achievements of the founder and longtime leader of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) ALF-CIO.
The events took place this weekend because Tuesday March 31 is Cesar Chavez Day a state holiday honoring the life and death of the Chicano civil rights leader. During this 81st Legislative Session Rep. Alonzo has filed two House Resolutions commemorating Chavez which have both been passed by lawmakers in Austin.
Cesar Chavez was a passionate advocate for social justice and civil rights for the poor and the disenfranchised not only in Texas but all over the country. He was a role model for many hard-working Americans especially farm workers. He was truly an American hero. Chavez rallied for and succeeded in improving the wages schooling housing and other living conditions of farm workers of all ethnic backgrounds. In 1991 Chavez received one of Mexicos premier awards Aguila Azteca (Aztec Eagle) for contributions made outside Mexico. Additionally in 1994 he was posthumously presented with our nations highest civilian honor the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As a former migrant worker myself may family and I are honored indeed to join the millions of Americans and Texans across the U.S. who pay tribute to this great American hero said Rep. Alonzo.
At 9 am Saturday morning the Dallas Peace Center held a Mass in honor of Cesar E. Chavez at the Cathedral Guadalupe on Ross Avenue. Following the Mass people gathered in front of the Cathedral to take part in a procession headed to the Dallas Farmers Market. At the market free information about Chavez was provided by various community resource organizations. Later that day at 2pm Rep. Alonzo was invited to participate in a Cesar Chavez Celebration at the Union Hall on 2218 East Main Street in Grand Prairie Texas where he spoke and presented a proclamation in Chavezs honor.
Alonzo shared copies of both of his resolutions with all schools located in his House District 104 in Dallas and Grand Prairie throughout the day. The first Resolution HR 300 honors the life of Cesar E. Chavez on March 31 2009 by commemorating the 82nd anniversary of his birth. HR 308 honors the life of Cesar Chavez and recognizes the month beginning March 31 2009 as Cesar Chavez Farmworker Appreciation Month in Texas.
