Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Texas State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo today urged all teachers of the humanities interested in being nominated for a Teacher of the Year award to consider application for the 2011-2012 Outstanding Teaching Award to be presented by Humanities Texas the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. These annual awards recognize teaching excellence in such humanities subjects as history and social studies literature and language arts government would culture or any foreign language.
As a strong supporter of education teachers and the teaching profession in general I know there are outstanding teachers in the Dallas area worthy of this honor said Rep. Alonzo.
I encourage any and all qualified teachers out there to consider application to this outstanding annual program that honors teachers and their work of excellence in the classroom. Most importantly there are cash awards of up to $5000 tied in with the honor continued Rep. Alonzo.
This year Humanities Texas will present a total of 13 awards. Twelve teachers will be selected to receive the Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award. This award includes a $5000 prize and an additional $500 for the winners school to purchase humanities-based instructional materials.
One Texas history teacher will be selected to receive the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award an award established in memory of Ms. Howell former chair of the Humanities Texas Board of directors as a lasting tribute to her service to the organization and her commitment to the study of Texas history. The teacher recognized for this distinguished award will receive $5000 plus an additional $500 for his or her school to purchase instructional materials in Texas history.
Nominees for the Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award must be fulltime teachers in the humanities. Teachers of art drama and music are also eligible if they emphasize the history criticism and theory of the arts in their instruction. Only teachers of courses in Texas history are eligible for the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award.
To nominate a teacher please complete a nomination form and return it to Humanities Texas by the DEADLINE of Monday December 12 2011. The nomination form and instructions can be found online by visiting the website at:

Humanities Texas will contact each nominated teacher and invite him or her to submit an official application. Winners will be announced in the spring 2012.
