Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. On Thursday Chairman Wheeler and the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) released an official plan for Internet regulations. Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) released the following statement in response:
The future of the Internet is important to all of us. As a senior Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee I have followed the FCCs work on broadband regulation for many years and Ive consistently supported the Commissions light-touch approach which has created a whole new sector in our economy and transformed the way Americans communicate and receive information every day.
With todays decision to reclassify broadband as a common carrier service the Commission has granted itself needed authorities to protect our constituents and local businesses from potential abuses like throttling and blocking.
Title II however is a blunt instrument written for a different era and intended for a different industry. I am concerned that with this action the Commission has opened a Pandoras Box that may freeze investment harm job creation and deny the very regulatory certainty that the American people need. I hope that the House and Senate Commerce Committees will now begin earnest discussions to find a broad bipartisan agreement that will ensure permanent bright line net neutrality protections for our constituents and local businesses and avoid the unnecessary Depression-era authorities the FCC has just been granted."
