Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. On Wednesday Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) joined House Democrats in voting for the House to consider a clean funding bill that could be signed into law before the Department of Homeland Security is forced to shut down on February 28. A shutdown would furlough or deny pay to 26706 law enforcement officials disaster response officials and other DHS personnel in Texas alone and 212370 nationwide.
This is the third time House Democrats have moved for a vote to end this manufactured crisis and the third time House Republicans have blocked action.
If we dont pass a funding bill DHS will be forced to shut down in three days. Despite dire warnings from Members of their own party the Majority voted to block a clean funding bill that could keep our communities safe" Green said. The people of the 29th District of Texas deserve better. With this vote House Republicans had a chance to send a clean DHS funding bill to the Senate and on to the President before the deadline."
Without action in the next two days the bulk of DHSs management and support of the homeland security infrastructure that was built following the 9/11 terrorist attacks would be shuttered. Law enforcement officials border patrol agents disaster response officials counterterrorism experts and other DHS personnel that help keep our nation safe would either be furloughed or required to work without pay.
Green said As the elected representatives it is our job to do everything we can to protect our country from dangers and threats. This should not be a partisan issue nor should it be exploited for political gain. American families are depending on us to do our job and pass a clean funding bill."
