Rep. Herrero Files Legislation to Keep Tourism Dollars Local

abel-herreroTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Rep. Abel Herrero D-Robstown filed legislation that would maintain clean and safe beaches for the millions of tourists who visit the Coastal Bend each year. House Bill 1915 would allow the cities of Corpus Christi and Port Aransas to retain 2 of the hotel occupancy taxes collected by the cities to be reinvested for beach maintenance and restoration. The law would put these two cities on equal standing with other cities along the coast that already get back a portion of these funds. The money would specifically go toward beach maintenance safety upgrades and erosion management projects efforts that would help bring increased tourism to the area and an additional boost to the local economy. Corpus Christi beaches are among the states most valuable natural resources" Rep. Herrero said. This bill would not only help to ensure that their natural beauty continues to attract tourists but maintain more funds locally to help support the economy. Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez expressed her support for the proposal saying the funds will help the local economy. Tourism generates an annual economic impact of $1 billion for the Corpus Christi region so it is a good investment for the State of Texas to grow the tourism economy" Martinez said. Rep. Todd Hunter has signed onto the bill as joint author and Sen. Juan Chuy Hinojosa filed companion legislation in the Senate. Rep. Herrero is now serving in his fifth term as a member of the Texas House of Representatives. He currently chairs the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence and serves on the House Committee on Energy Resources. He represents District 34 which includes Robstown Bishop Banquete Petronila Agua Dulce Driscoll and parts of Corpus Christi and Sandia.
