Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Today State Representative Charlie Howard (R-Sugar Land) commended the efforts of the House Committee on Redistricting. Current map proposals by the committee acknowledge the tremendous population growth in Fort Bend County and add an additional house district to the county.
Over the past decade Fort Bend County has witnessed tremendous growth. Because of this growth it is imperative that all residents be provided with equal and adequate representation stated Rep. Howard. The current proposed maps acknowledge our growth as a county and will benefit all citizens of Fort Bend.
The current maps proposed by Rep. Burt Solomons (R-Carrolton) have been agreed to by a bipartisan coalition of legislators representing Fort Bend County. While no representative from Fort Bend County is a member of the House Committee on Redistricting including Rep. Howard the committee recognized the areas growth with a map that increases the overall representation of the county in the legislature.
Since the release of the proposed maps concerns have been raised regarding school districts property values and even city limit lines. The redistricting process has absolutely no effect on these matters. Rather the current proposal in the House will provide citizens of Fort Bend County with additional representation in the Texas Legislature.
I commend the efforts of Chairman Solomons and the entire House Committee on Redistricting said Rep. Howard. The current Fort Bend map proposal meets all of the federal requirements which are difficult to achieve by creating four districts with essentially the same population as well as maintaining compliance with the Voting Rights Act. I appreciate the committee members diligence in drawing our county a map that is both fair and legal as well as conscious of our substantial population growth.
