Rep. Maldonado Files Legislation Requiring Local Approval For Landfills

width=65Austin State Representative Diana Maldonado (HD-52) of Round Rock Wednesday filed legislation placing restrictions on the creation of new landfills. The bill specifically requires that municipalities within five miles of the proposed landfill provide written consent before a new permit is approved. While landfills provide an invaluable service to our communities and counties we must also consider their impact on the public health and economic development of the surrounding areas Maldonado said. My bill would give local cities the ones that will truly be affected an equal say in the planning and approval process of a new landfill. Maldonados legislation House Bill 3311 would require the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to receive written consent from each town located within five miles of the landfill and with a population of more than 5000 people before receiving a permit. The bill will likely be referred to the House Committee on Environmental Regulation. Once referred Maldonado will request a public hearing for the bill. Maldonado sits on the House Committee on State Affairs and the Committee on Defense and Veterans Affairs. She is serving her first term in the Texas House of Representatives and represents House District 52 which encompasses a portion of Williamson County including Round Rock Taylor Hutto Thrall Coupland and part of Georgetown and Austin.
