Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas (DALLAS) - State Representative Ron Simmons who represents a portion of the city of Dallas in the Texas House of Representatives has issued the following statement in response to the shootings on Thursday night that claimed the lives of five police officers in downtown Dallas:
Weve seen tragedies like this before in our nation but it never hurts quite as much as when it occurs at home. My wife Lisa and I are absolutely heartbroken from the news of the deaths of the police officers from the Dallas Police Department and DART.
With some of the darkest days in our citys history we have also seen some of the best aspects of our community. Dallas has rallied behind the police department with efforts to aid the families of the fallen. DPD Chief David Brown Mayor Mike Rawlings and other city officials have shown great leadership in the aftermath of this tragic event.
One of the cities I represent in the Texas House Carrollton lost two outstanding community members in Brent Thompson and Michael J. Smith. Officer Thompson 43 had been a DART officer the past 7 years. Sergeant Smith was a 28-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department. I honor these men along with all of the officers slain on Thursday night for protecting citizens exercising their right to free speech and their sacrifices.
As a State Representative it is my job to make sure peace officers both state and local have the tools they need to properly safeguard the citizens of our great state. My colleagues in the Texas Legislature and I will do all we can to protect the Texans we have been elected to serve. My family will continue to pray for the lives lost in this senseless act of violence."
