Texas Cancer Council’s Tools for Texas ConferenceMCALLEN Texas (February 13 2008) — Rep. Veronica Gonzales (D – McAllen) will be the keynote speaker at the Texas Cancer Council’s Tools for Texas conference taking place on February 13-14 2008 in San Antonio.
The conference is a statewide initiative focusing on the cancer issues of Latino families and underserved communities in Texas and will involve community planners and stakeholders health professionals volunteers and citizens interested in working to reduce the impact of cancer in their community.
“With 85000 Texans diagnosed with cancer annually we must provide our community with the resources to overcome the illness” said Gonzales. “By increasing knowledge and awareness we can help build strong prevention programs in communities across Texas.”
Rep. Gonzales’s address Passion for the Mission will focus on Texas’s role in fighting cancer. Central to the mission is last year’s passage of the constitutional amendment and legislation that will invest $3 billion over ten years to fund research that will find a cure for cancer. The talk will also feature a video presentation from two Valley citizens one who is a cancer survivor and one who is undergoing cancer treatment as well as comments from Rep. Patrick Rose Chairman of the House Committee on Human Services and one of the authors of the landmark legislation.
