Representative Flynn Announces House District 2 Recipient for Texas Armed Services Scholarship

dan-flynnTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – (SULPHUR SPRINGS) – Representative Dan Flynn (R-Van) is pleased to announce the recipient of the Texas Armed Services Scholarship from House District 2. Clayton Jones, a resident of Sulphur Springs, has been awarded the scholarship that covers up to $10,000 per year. The scholarship program encourages academic development and dedication to the various branches of the state and federal armed services. Jones must commit to at least 4 years of ROTC service while in college and receive a commission, or agree to enroll, in a branch of the armed services upon graduation.

A graduate of Saltillo ISD, Clayton was dual enrolled at Northeast Texas Community College in Mt. Pleasant where he studied American History, Economics and English. A member of the National Beta Honor Society, Jones ranked 7th in his class and maintained a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Clayton was actively involved in UIL Academic Competitions and was a Regional Qualifier from 2010-2013. He was also a member of FCCLA, FFA, and an elected County Commissioner for American Legion Boys State.

Clayton is also a focused athlete and lettered in 6 sports while at Saltillo: cross country, basketball, golf, tennis, track, & baseball. He was the team captain for the cross country team and qualified for state in both cross country and track. He was a regional qualifier in golf.

Outside of academics and athletics, Clayton is a model citizen actively involved in various community projects. A committed participant and volunteer with the Northeast Texas Food Bank, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, Sulphur Springs Work Camp, and the Hopkins County Youth Leadership Team, Clayton has worked to better the communities he belongs to by giving back through countless hours of service. He is also active in the young men’s bible study through his church, First United Methodist.

Representative Flynn is proud to award this scholarship to such a well-rounded and driven individual. “He is a highly motivated young man,” Representative Flynn remarked. “His commitment to giving back to his community is commendable. Clayton has an excellent work ethic and I have no doubt that his dedication and integrity will serve him well as he works toward a career within the armed forces.”

Clayton has been accepted to Texas Tech University and is enrolled for the Fall Semester. He plans to major in Political Science.

The Texas Armed Service Scholarship is awarded to an eligible and deserving student appointed by his or her State Representative or Senator, the Lieutenant Governor, or Governor. The TASSP has been created to assist promising students from throughout the state who are committed to education and service. It encourages young leaders to participate in the Texas Guard, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, or to become commissioned officers in the United States armed services.
