Representative Wayne Christian Declares Victory For Academic Freedom

width=65Austin Texas- Today the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) approved language that requires students and teachers to examine all sides of scientific theories.  This will ensure that Texas continues its nearly 20 year commitment to teaching students all sides of scientific theories and sends a loud and clear message that the SBOE and Texans alike reject censorship in the classroom. Representative Christian was happy to play a role in influencing the SBOE vote.  He filed HB 4224 because he was concerned about the possibility of a drastic change in the way science will be taught in Texas.  The bill would have ensured that Texas continues its nearly 20 year commitment to teaching students to analyze review and critique scientific explanations including hypotheses and theories as to the strengths and weaknesses using scientific evidence and information.  Christian and thousands of other concerned Texans voices were heard today when the SBOE approved language that requires students and teachers to critique and examine all sides of scientific theories enacting similar language to what Christians bill proposed. I congratulate the SBOE on voting to reject censorship in the classroom.  Scientific progress results when we have more information not less said Christian. Due to Texas size the textbook industry caters to Texas scientific curriculum.  Thus todays SBOE vote has not only saved Texas from going down a road of censorship in the classroom it has saved the rest of the country as well. The new SBOE language now reads: In all fields of Science; analyze evaluate and critique scientific explanations of science by using empirical evidence logical reasoning and experimental and observational testing including examining all sides of scientific evidence of those scientific explanations so as to encourage critical thinking by the student. Christian is serving his sixth term as State Representative for House District 9 which includes Jasper Nacogdoches Sabine San Augustine and Shelby counties.  His current committee assignments include Vice Chair of Criminal Jurisprudence  and a member of Business and Industry.  He is the President of the Texas Conservative Coalition.
