San Antonio Employees Begin Work on first Boeing 787 Dreamliner

width=187Texas Insider Report: SAN ANTONIO TX  --  The first 787 airplane flew from Boeings manufacturing plant in Everett Wash. to San Antonio last Friday. Boeing employees in San Antonio will install electronic and mechanical equipment upgrade software and test systems. Boeing will hire 450 workers on a temporary basis to work alongside 1700 experienced workers to complete the work. Employees will also work on any wiring or equipment issues if needed before delivering the plane to its final customer. Boeing first announced that San Antonio would gain commercial modifications work on the 787 Dreamliner back in 2007. The Boeing Co. has begun getting the first of six 787 Dreamliner passenger airplanes ready for customers. However Boeing suffered a series of technical issues that delayed the 787 including problems with the availability of components. Three of the six planes that are being shipped to San Antonio were used previously in flight testing. Workers at Boeings San Antonio site already perform maintenance and modification work on the Air Forces fleet KC-135 C-17 and C-130 aircraft. Work on the six 787 airplanes will take place in San Antonio beginning in March and will extend through 2013. Everyone on our team is excited to join the 787 program" says Kevin Devine vice president and general manager of the San Antonio site. This airplane is about as advanced as you can get and there are high expectations tied to this work package. I am confident that our team will get the job done" Devine said. The 787-8 Dreamliner will carry between 210 to 250 passengers on routes of 7650 to 8200 nautical miles. The 787-9 Dreamliner will carry between 250 290 passengers on routes of 8000 to 8500 nautical miles.
