Endorsement comes after a long bitter primary fight
Ending a holdout that had angered many Democrats and hindered the party from unifying against Republican Donald Trump Sen. Bernard Sanders on Tuesday finally lent his support to Hillary Clintons presidential campaign or president but did so while
taking veiled shots at her big-money campaign contributions and Democratic Party Super-Delegates.
At a campaign rally in Portsmouth New Hampshire Mr. Sanders appeared alongside his former rival and said hell work to make sure she defeats Mr. Trump in November. http://texasinsider.org/sanders-endorses-clinton-takes-veiled-shots-wall-street-donations-party-superdelegates/
I have come here not to talk bout the past but to focus on the future. That future will be shaped more by what happens on Nov. 8 in voting booths across our nation than by any other event in the world" he said.
I have come here to make it as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton and why she must become our next president."
But moments earlier with Mrs. Clinton standing right beside him he boasted how his campaign unlike that of Mrs. Clinton relied only on small donations and rejected money from Wall Street.
Let me also thank … the millions of contributors who showed the world that we could run a successful national campaign based on small individual contributions 2-and-a-half million of them. Together we have begun a political revolution to transform America and that revolution continues" he said.
He also seemed to credit Democratic Party superdelegates for ensuring Mrs. Clintons victory even though the former first lady also won a majority of pledged delegates in primaries and caucuses.
Secretary Clinton goes into the convention with 389 more pledged delegates than we have and a lot more superdelegates" Mr. Sanders said to scattered boos in the crowd. Secretary Clinton was won the Democratic nominating process and I congratulate her for that."
The endorsement comes after a long bitter primary fight in which the two Democrats questioned each others judgment and qualifications to be president. The primary effectively ended well over a month ago after Mrs. Clinton crossed the delegate threshold needed to become her partys nominee but Mr. Sanders still fought on claiming his candidacy represented a larger fight for progressive priorities such as debt-free college stronger Wall Street regulations and other issues.
In recent weeks Mrs. Clinton had moved closer to Mr. Sanders positions on health care college affordability and other issues. The Democratic Party also adopted as part of its platform a pathway toward the legalization of marijuana a call for a $15-an-hour minimum wage stronger action against climate change and other positions Mr. Sanders advocated throughout the primary.
The shifts by both Mrs. Clinton and the party itself allowed Mr. Sanders and his supporters to claim a moral victory and gave the senator the political cover he needed to make Tuesdays endorsement.
But Mr. Trump attacked Mr. Sanders for backing his opponent saying the senator has sold out.
Bernie Sanders who has lost most of his leverage has totally sold out to Crooked
Hillary Clinton" he tweeted Tuesday morning ahead of the Portsmouth event. I am somewhat surprised Bernie Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters. They are not happy that he is selling out!"
