Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas — “The one I thing that has upset most people is having the audacity to blame America for 9-11,” noted former SBOE chair, and current Texas State Board of Education member Tincy Miller tells Insider’s Jim Cardle.
— Don’t miss Miller’s update on the latest SBOE actions to address the dilemma of the CSCOPE curriculum being used in the classrooms of some of Texas’ 5+ million school children.
“CSCOPE is not research based, it gives only one view of history, and does not give you (or Texas students) a balanced view at all,” Miller said.
“We had pulled down our (SBOE CSCOPE Review) Ad Hoc Committee in June, being told that CSCOPE was dead. Then we found out, its not dead, its out in the ‘public domain’ and leaders like Senate Education Committee Chairman Dan Patrick & Lt. Governor David Dewhurst asked that we look at it again,” Miller said.
“Our SBOE Ad Hoc Committee has been reconvened, and they’re beginning their meetings as I speak.”
“Our job, or our panel of SBOE reviewers, will look at all our Texas History Curriculum, K-through-12, and they will review and match it to our state curriculum standards, and then report out (their findings) by November 1,” said Miller.
“From what we understand, some of the schools are still using it even though they know we have a lot of concerns, serious concerns, about CSCOPE … We do have the authority to review the Lesson Plans and then we give a report.
“We will put the review on the website of the TEA (Texas Education Agency,) and we’re hopin that parents will then go to their local School Boards and challenge their schools, ask if they[‘re using CSCOPE,” the former SBOE head said.
Tincy Miller represents Dist. 12 on the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE). An SBOE Member for approximately 28 of the past 30 years, Miller was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to serve as Chair from 2003-2007.
